Creative Writing II

Course Description:
In this course, students will practice skills that writers use in generating effective topics, and finding the form of writing that best suits a particular topic. Create effective pieces of creative writing, appealing to readers, by demonstrating the five strategies used by successful authors: images, energy, tension, pattern, and insight. Understand and demonstrate the four stages of creative revision—re-seeing, rewriting, editing, and proofreading—and choose when to use the appropriate strategy. Determine various facets of the world of creative writing, researching literary magazines and attending two live readings. Self-publish one’s own polished work in a chapbook and hone presentation skills by giving a live reading of that work. Thoroughly understand the writing process, from inspiration to creating, drafting, and revision. Increase one’s ability to concentrate creatively for longer periods of time and focus the mind productively, sustaining a state of “flow” conducive to effective writing. Read complex texts effectively. Participate in a lively, nourishing, intellectually stimulating writing community, as recipient and contributor.
