Setting Up a Virtual Learning Space in Your Home

Creating a virtual learning environment for your child at home doesn’t have to be difficult. Ideally, a designated area can be devoted to at-home study, which can be customized to fit the needs of your child. Here are a few ideas to transform an existing space into a conducive learning area.

Choose the Best Location

Virtual learning should be quiet with few or no distractions. Keep in mind that everyone has their unique way of working. Some children need complete silence to do their best work. In this case, a spare room, their bedroom or a quiet area away from others would be the ideal spot. For the child that works better with background noise, a spot near some quiet activity may be best, such as the kitchen. If you are working from home, you may want to set up a virtual learning space in or near your workspace.

Choosing a comfortable spot will be conducive to learning; however, if it is too comfortable, your child may not work as efficiently. A comfortable chair is important since it will be used for prolonged periods. The desk or table should be large enough to accommodate the necessary learning materials, i.e., computers, books, notebooks, etc. If the bedroom is the best place to set up the virtual learning environment, avoid using the bed as the place for working. Your child may find it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep during bedtime if it is used as a workspace, and you do not want naptime to become an issue in the middle of a lesson.

No Distractions

One of the largest challenges to creating the ideal virtual learning spot at home is eliminating distractions, especially when other little ones are around. Set up rules such as no phones, social media, or TV during learning time. Some students will do better with quiet music playing in the background, while others will need silence to do their best work. Keeping the distractions to a minimum will help your child stay focused and attentive to the lessons.

Create the Perfect Virtual Learning Space

If possible, the virtual learning space should be dedicated to that alone. Classes, homework, and studying are done in this space. However, this is not always an option. Minimum space may dictate that your child’s learning area may need to be portable, so all materials are kept in a special container and brought out when it is time to work.

Whatever space you have for your child’s learning, allow them to personalize it and make it their own. Then, they can decorate the space in ways that will motivate and inspire them.
