1st Grade

Welcome to 1st Grade!  I am excited to share our school with you.

Learning Targets:

In first grade, your child will learning these reading and writing skills:

  • Identify setting, characters, and sequence of events in literature

  • Continue phonics instruction from kindergarten in greater detail, learning alternate spellings for long and short vowel sounds, consonant blends, compound words, plurals, etc.  

  • Learn to read many high-frequency words “by sight” (sight words)

  • Write independently, using complete sentences

  • Begin learning rules for capitalization and punctuation

First graders also work on learning these concepts in math:

  • Count, write, and name and work with numbers to 120  

  • Skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s  

  • Represent and solve addition and subtraction problems with two-digit numbers

  • Identify coins and know their values

  • Tell time to the hour and half-hour

  • Interpret simple graphs                               

  • Describe and classify shapes by their attributes

In addition, they will be learning social studies and science concepts:

  • Identify parts and functions of plants

  • Learn animal classifications

  • Identify systems of the body

  • Weather

  • Identify early inventors and famous Americans

  • Just to name a few….

  • Participate in weekly online classes in math and language arts

  • Show and tell – in online classroom, using webcams and microphones

  • Field trips –we’ve gone to a pumpkin patch, museums, caves, nature centers, and many other educational venues
